Faced with increasing demand for its high quality solutions in the sector, this acquisition provides a superb platform for continued growth for Yusen Logistics. The Transfreight business dovetails well with Yusen Logistics’ award-winning pan European automotive offering. Both companies offer industry leading expertise in cross-docking, transportation and manufacturing plant logistical support and operations, but with complementary regional scope.

Ian Veitch, CRO Yusen Logistics Europe, commented: “This business offers an excellent fit for Yusen Logistics, with shared customers and service offer, but with a regional focus which complements Yusen’s infrastructure. Customers from both our companies will benefit from the combined organisation's industry expertise and broad based supply chain solutions, as well as new team members."

This expanded infrastructure will enhance Yusen’s existing automotive network capability by adding key network consolidation points in Western Europe, as well as multi-modal possibilities running between Northern and Southern Europe. In particular, the acquisition boosts Yusen Logistics’ footprint and skill base in Northern France, an area where many automotive tier one suppliers and OEMs are located.

Yusen Logistics’ award winning automotive network extends from Poland to Portugal; Ukraine to UK, and currently handles in excess of 6 million cubic metres or 1.3 million tons of materials per annum on behalf of leading OEMS and tiered suppliers in Europe.

Yusen Logistics Subsidiary in Malaysia to Expand Cold Chain Operations

$

TASCO Berhad, a Yusen Logistics subsidiary in Malaysia, has reached agreements to acquire Gold Cold Transport Sdn Bhd (GCT) and MILS Cold Chain Logistics Sdn Bhd (MCCL), two leading cold chain logistics providers in Malaysia. The agreements, subject to approval by BURSA Malaysia, will enable TASCO to significantly expand its cold chain operations in the country. The proceedings are expected to be completed by the end of June.

In Malaysia, demand for refrigerated transportation and cold storage facilities for perishable products, such as fresh produce, beverages and pharmaceuticals, is rising as a result of population growth and increased personal consumption throughout the ASEAN region. In addition, due to anticipated growth of online shopping, increased demand for scheduled deliveries using reefer trucks is also anticipated. Under these circumstances, TASCO will make a full-scale entry into the cold chain logistics segment to support growth and business expansion by combining ocean and air cargo transport with contract logistics.

GCT is one of the largest cold chain logistics providers in Malaysia. It has 174 reefer trucks and a warehouse storage capacity of about 31,000 m², primarily handling frozen and chilled foods. GCT manages more than 80% of the domestic share of ice cream distribution.

MCCL is the tenth largest cold chain logistics provider in Malaysia. It operates chilled and frozen warehouses (about 7,000 m²) in the area adjacent to Westport of Port Klang. Located near customs and port authorities, the area is also a commercial free zone. To meet the expected rise in increased container handling at Westport, TASCO concluded an agreement to purchase a land (about 160,000 m²) and ambient warehouses (about 31,000 m²) in the area in addition to the purchase of MCCL.

GCT and MCCL support halal logistics and are capable of coordinating halal logistic services with TASCO, which was acquired by Yusen Logistics in 2015. By doing this, Yusen Logistics expects to make a full-scale entry into the cold chain business in Malaysia, and supplement and strengthen its logistics services. By strategically positioning its facilities, Yusen Logistics continues to expand its capabilities not only for cold chain, but for all of its customers' logistics needs as well.

The award recognises the quality of Yusen Logistics’ Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) Vendor Managed Inventory solution which involves over 1,400 product lines, including Health & Beauty, Dry Grocery and Wine, as well as Tesco Own Brands. The operation is based at Yusen Logistics Czech’s 23,000 sqm strategic distribution centre in Strančice (near Prague), which is providing storage and value added services to 75 Tesco suppliers from around the globe, as well as to Tesco itself.

The contract is for the movement of engine blocks from the manufacturer in Germany to the production plant of a leading American car manufacturer, based in Moraine, Ohio, as well as the provision of a closed loop supply chain back to Germany for the re-usable packaging media.

The Yusen Logistics solution involves collections from NHG’s plant in Saarbrücken, stockholding and container build, then movement to the port and seafreight to the USA. Yusen then provides a total supply chain in the US, with storage in Cincinnati and onward movement to the factory gate. Yusen Logistics is also handling all export and import Customs formalities in both Germany and the USA.

This solution is based around rail and sea. With only 50km of the total distance travelled being road freight, this innovative yet robust supply chain offers a carbon neutral solution to these international flows.

As part of the solution, a significant investment has been made in returnable plastic pallets, and the round trip flows of these back to NHG in Germany form an important element of the solution,

As a European market leader, NEUE HALBERG-GUSS GmbH supplies automotive and engine manufacturers all over the world with its products, in particular engine blocks, crankshafts and cylinder heads.

Mario Cavallucci, Managing Director, Yusen Logistics (Germany) GmbH: "We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this contract by NHG.

Yusen Logistics has a strong understanding of the complex and individual requirements of the automotive industry. With our tailor-made, international logistics solutions and our industry know-how, we are supporting NHG in optimizing its supply chain to better serve its customers. "
