Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc., a leading global third-party logistics provider, has completed a LED light retrofit project that will reduce electricity usage and expense by more than 60 percent at one of its warehouses at its Carson, CA campus.

The company recently replaced 966 outdated fixtures with energy-efficient LED lights at the 486,000-square-foot facility, the largest warehouse in its network.  The retrofit will reduce energy use on average by one million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year. Yusen Logistics expects to reap a 60 percent savings in total annual lighting costs as well as a 65 percent decrease in power consumption as compared to last year.

In addition to significant energy cost savings, the retrofit will also create a safer work environment by providing brighter and more uniform lighting throughout the warehouse.

The project signifies Yusen Logistics’ ongoing commitment to using environmentally-friendly solutions to support its business.  “Not only does the new lighting system improve the work area for our team members, but it reduces our carbon footprint,” said Ryan Entis, Operations Support Analyst, Contract Logistics, Yusen Logistics. “The retrofit will eliminate 309 tons of carbon dioxide each year, which is the equivalent of removing 3,488 cars from the road.”

Yusen Logistics partnered with U.S. Energy Recovery, a Phoenix-based provider of energy saving solutions, on the project.

This new operation represents the official launch of Yusen Logistics’ GDP compliant global pharma airfreight services from Germany and is the latest step in the company’s customer-driven development in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Frankfurt’s global network, frequency of service, choice of carrier, streamlined handling processes and supportive Customs are all part of its high quality pharmaceutical offering.

The operation links Yusen Logistics’ German import/export consolidation centre and European road network, to form a true multi-modal hub. This gives Yusen Logistics the flexibility to create efficiencies, driving out cost, providing value to customers in this highly demanding environment.

Yusen Logistics’ European Pharmaceutical Superhighway is already contracted to carry over 2 million pallets this year, providing shared and single use solutions to highly complex supply chain requirements for our customers.

The service is dedicated solely to the stringent requirements of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry, with over 50,000 delivery points in Europe alone. Yusen is currently making 20,000 deliveries per week across 36 countries.

Yusen Logistics (Thailand) Co.,Ltd. obtained halal certification from the Central Islamic Council of Thailand (CICOT), a halal certification board on April 8. With this certification, we are the first halal-certified warehousing and logistics provider in Thailand.

Thailand is seeing increasing production and export of halal foods and products. Despite this growing interest in halal products, there were no warehouses with halal certification in Thailand. Taking into account the growth potential of the market for halal products as well as future logistics demands, we decided to obtain halal certification.

The certified warehouse is Yusen Laemchabang Logistics Center 1 (YLLC1) Group 2 Warehouse # 3, located approximately 20 kilometers from Laem Chabang Port. Part of the warehouse space and truck entrance and exit has been renovated to halal specifications. The halal space is separated by sheets, and there is a special-purpose handwashing area. Our staff trained in correct handling methods carry out operations following these procedures, using halal-only handlifts and pallets within this area.

In April 2015, Yusen Logistics was the first Japanese logistics provider in Malaysia to acquire halal certification for both transport and warehousing operations. We have since offered a halal logistics service using trucks and warehouses. Now, with our first halal certification in Thailand, we will continue to develop our global halal logistics services, working together with Malaysia and delivering supply chain logistics that meet customer needs as supply chain logistics provider offering halal logistics in Thailand.

Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc., a leading global third-party logistics provider, has received the G75 Award from Inbound Logistics Magazine as a top green supply chain partner. This marks the third year Yusen Logistics has been named to the G75 list.

The company was recognized for a lighting retrofit project that is reducing electricity usage and expense by more than 60 percent at its Carson, CA, warehouse.

“We are honored to be recognized by Inbound Logistics,” says Greg Futato, Vice President, Contract Logistics Group, Yusen Logistics. “Yusen Logistics is committed to using sustainable solutions to support our business. We pride ourselves in finding ways to reduce our impact on the environment, while cutting costs and increasing operational efficiency.”

Each year, Inbound Logistics recognizes the top 75 green supply chain partners as determined by the magazine’s editorial staff. Yusen Logistics was chosen for replacing 966 outdated fixtures with energy-efficient LED lights at its 486,000-square-foot facility, the largest warehouse in its network. The retrofit will reduce energy use on average by one million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year. The company expects to reap a 60 percent savings in total annual lighting costs as well as a 65 percent decrease in power consumption as compared to last year.

The retrofit will eliminate 309 tons of carbon dioxide annually, the equivalent of removing 3,488 cars from the road. In addition to significantly reducing Yusen Logistics’ carbon footprint, the retrofit is creating a safer work environment by providing brighter and more uniform lighting throughout the warehouse.

Yusen Logistics partnered with U.S. Energy Recovery, a Phoenix-based provider of energy saving solutions, on the project.

Methodology
Inbound Logistics' 75 Green Supply Chain Partners highlights sustainability leaders in the logistics and transportation sector. The selection process considers a company's involvement in three areas: participation in public-private partnerships; corporate sustainability initiatives; and collaborative customer-driven projects. Within this context, four benchmarks carry weight in IL’s decision-making: measurable green results, sustainability innovation, continuous improvement, and industry recognition. As part of their due diligence, IL editors solicited more than 200 transportation and logistics companies to complete a questionnaire specifying their sustainability investments and commitment. The editors also conducted their own research, online and over the phone.

About Inbound Logistics
Since its inception in 1981, Inbound Logistics' educational mission is to illustrate the benefits of demand-driven logistics practices, give companies the knowledge to help them match the inbound flow of materials to their demand, and align their business process to support that shift. Inbound Logistics offers real-world examples and decision support to guide businesses to efficiently manage logistics, reduce and speed inventory, and offset rising transport costs, supporting business scalability across their value chain. Donmueang International Airport has seen an increase in freight volumes due to line expansions by low-cost carriers. Going forwards, freight volumes are expected to increase further and, in order to cater to strong logistics demands, we have established a new office inside the airport.

Previously, Yusen Logistics conducted its business processes at the airport using the facilities of its partner companies. Now that we are able to operate independently, we are able to provide a more meticulous service, such as conducting checks on freight conditions within the airport terminal and clearing customs under our own name; we can now also be present when trucks are loaded, and otherwise execute all facets of transportation management in a smooth manner. In addition, in order to be able to deal flexibly with emergency cargo, we have established transport service by lunchtime next day when arrives midnight.

In April this year, Yusen Logistics (Thailand) Co., Ltd. became the first logistics company in Thailand to commence Halal-certified warehouse operations, and we are expanding our services to be able to cater to the needs of all our customers. The establishment of the new Donmueang International Airport office will enable us to further improve our services, and provide our Thai customers with a supply chain and logistics service that utilizes our global network.
