Yusen Logistics Awarded Inbound Supply Chain Contract with Halfords

$

Halfords’ inbound supply chain comprises over fifty unique origin sourcing points across eighteen countries, including China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Tunisia, the Philippines and USA.

Yusen Logistics is responsible for managing Halfords’ appointed sea and air freight partners, ensuring its 30,000 product lines are delivered to their UK DCs on time to meet sales demand.

As part of the new contract, Yusen Logistics carried out an analysis of Halfords’ existing inbound supply chain, identifying areas which could be streamlined, refined or revamped in line with Halfords’ evolving business needs.

Taking into account the complexities of Halfords’ global supply chain, the company’s expanding sourcing geographies and developing manufacturing trends, Yusen Logistics has worked collaboratively with Halfords to implement a tailored supply chain solution. The new solution, now in place, delivers enhanced visibility, and, going forward, will deliver improved inventory flows and automated communication and data handling processes.

As a result, supply chain and freight costs have been significantly reduced and improved visibility has led to greater control. Future deliverables will further enhance the solution, thus positively impacting the cost line as the contract progresses. One such initiative will save hundreds of man-hours by removing email communication and enabling real-time information reporting direct to the parties who require it.

Pierce Carey, Halfords commented: “Yusen Logistics has really become part of the Halfords family since they began managing our supply chain. They are forging relationships with all parties involved within our global supply chain, both internal and external, adding value across the entire business and bringing greater structure to way we work and communicate. An excellent foundation has been established for future development and growth.”

Kevin Appleton, MD Yusen Logistics UK added: “We are delighted to be working with Halfords on this global solution at an exciting time in their development.”

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; head office: Tokyo; president: Tadaaki Naito) and Yusen Logistics Co. Ltd. (YLK; head office: Tokyo; president: Kenji Mizushima) jointly conducted their 2016 Global NYK/YLK Week from September 5 to 9 in Japan. Thirty-two overseas staff members including staff from Japan were nominated from the Group’s global business bases to attend the program.

This training program has been jointly held by NYK and YLK since 2012 to deepen interchange among the participants across national, division, and company boundaries and further strengthen links and networks within the Group.

This year's theme was “Be Innovative!” The participants were first given lectures about each business segment’s strategy based on the NYK Group’s medium-term management plan and then exchanged opinions about the enhancement of competitiveness through a heightened understanding of the NYK Group Values.* These lectures and discussions allowed the participants to deepen their understanding of the NYK Group’s business and initiatives from many aspects. Those participants were then divided into four groups, and after active discussions on NYK Group issues, each group made a presentation on the theme of “Be Innovative!” to board members including the presidents of NYK and YLK, allowing the groups to have an impact on the Group’s business management.

At the end of the week, the participants traveled to Kyoto for a day of Japanese culture, including Zen meditation, helping the group to reflect deeply on the benefits of their week together. It is expected that all participants will take their experiences from the five-day program back to their offices to share with their colleagues.

The NYK Group respects the diversity of its employees and the spirit of challenge, and is dedicated to the development of its human resources so that the Group can be a place where all employees can work with pride and realize their dreams.

*NYK Group Values

Integrity, innovation, and intensity — the 3 I’s — are considered to represent the essential character of NYK, formed over the course of the company’s 130 year history. YUSEN Logistics awards Swisslog with Innovative AutoStore Automated Warehouse Contract in Singapore

$

Yusen Logistics, a leading provider of contract logistics and air/ocean freight forwarding has selected Swisslog Warehouse & Distribution Solutions to deliver the innovative AutoStore Automated System in Singapore.  The autonomous robots, which sit on the top of an aluminum grid as part of the innovative storage system, is expected to go into operation in 2017.

This light goods automatic storage and retrieval system (Autostore) investment is a result of Yusen Logistics’ deep insight into the philosophy of the shared economy and the need to manage rising business costs in the current global, lower-growth economy.

“The future of logistics is paved with innovation and automated technology. The industry has been transforming and growing in the coming years. The third party logistics industry itself is gearing up to take on the challenges and the opportunities offered by the latest technological advancements.

With innovative systems like AutoStore, it allows us to be ready for the future of logistics,” says Mr. Francis Kwa, Head of Contract Logistics, Yusen Logistics. “Innovation will bring about a brighter future as new skills, and innovative products and services are created.”

A joint effort between Yusen Logistics and Swisslog, the Tuas Warehouse will be equipped with the innovative AutoStore system to serve multiple customers under one roof and to cater to its growing needs. Swisslog will be responsible for the implementation of the AutoStore System that includes approximately 16,595 space for stored items.

“This investment enables Yusen to deliver five times more put-away and retrieval throughput without increasing current operating headcount cost. Storage volume is doubled in the same storage space in the warehouse. Doubling the volume of storage capacity within the current footprint coupled with productivity gains is the means to gain a competitive edge in a global economy that is being disrupted by technology.  This investment is one of the many innovations Yusen is embarking on to become a truly global total logistics provider,” added Mr Francis Kwa.

“Singapore is a key logistics hub in Asia, in particular ASEAN,” says Mr. Ng Kim Hung, Managing Director of Yusen Logistics. “This partnership with Swisslog is redefining cost, speed and flexibility in regional light goods distribution for our customers. This goods-to-person technology investment is a testament to Yusen investing in the future growth and transformation of Singapore’s logistics infrastructure”

“The Asia-Pacific region is an important growth market,” says Dr. Christian Baur, Chief Operating Officer of the Swisslog Group and CEO of Warehouse & Distribution Solutions (WDS) Division. “I’m very excited about this order in Singapore. It’s a key step to grow our business and demonstrates the success of our global growth strategy.”

“Today, cutting edge technologies like AutoStore System are revolutionizing the logistics industry to provide faster and more reliable delivery,” adds Koh Seng Teck, Head of Southeast Asia, Swisslog’s Warehouse & Distribution Solutions division. “We are excited to receive this order for our Innovative AutoStore solution from Yusen Logistics who is also actively involved in light goods distribution logistics. This partnership demonstrates our innovative solutions and the expertise of our team to transform the landscape for automation in logistics. We look forward to continuing to support Yusen’s growth.”

New Year's Message from President Kenji Mizushima

A very happy New Year to all employees of the Yusen Logistics Group.

I am extremely grateful to be able to celebrate the New Year with all of you, who work so hard in every country and every region of the world.

Review of 2016

The global economy in 2016 remained, for the most part, unpredictable. In Japan, consumer spending stagnated and economic recovery was limited. Overseas, the U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union and the result of the U.S. presidential election were both major surprises; in addition, emerging nations suffered economic slowdowns, and exchange rates were subject to sudden fluctuations.

The Yusen Logistics Group aimed to expand sales as part of our Medium-Term Business Plan. We achieved solid growth in freight volumes in our ocean and air freight forwarding businesses, notably with consignments originating in Asia; in terms of profit and loss, however, our air freight forwarding business operated in an increasingly severe environment—this was particularly the case with outbound freight from Japan. While our logistics business continued to make investments, some regions suffered from the effects of decelerating economic growth.

Medium-Term Business Plan

Our Medium-Term Business Plan, “GO FORWARD, Yusen Logistics-Next Challenges-,” has now entered its final stages. Our overarching aim was to achieve sustainable growth, and it was with this in mind that we engaged in our Growth Strategy, Operational Strategy and Investment Strategy. It is clear that we have seen some success in expanding freight volumes, which was one of the principal elements of our Growth Strategy. Indeed, in our ocean freight forwarding business, I have personally experienced a positive shift in the way we are perceived by our shipping companies. This is a significant achievement, and one that was only made possible by the efforts of all of our employees in every country and region of the world. Thank you for your efforts.

With regard to our Logistics Business, we strived to improve the value-added services we provide in every region. This year, as has been previously announced, we will complete construction of multi-function logistics facilities in Bajío, Mexico, and Thilawa, Myanmar. Using these and our other overseas logistics facilities in an efficient manner, it is my wish that Yusen Logistics continues to provide high-quality services that cater to the sophisticated needs of our customers.

Looking ahead to 2017

2017 will see the completion of our current Medium-Term Business Plan, “GO FORWARD, Yusen Logistics-Next Challenges-” and, as such, I expect the early months of this year to be fruitful. The results we have achieved over the past 3 years have led to a strengthening of our corporate foundations, and will undoubtedly serve as a springboard for further progress.

This year will also see the announcement of a new Medium-Term Business Plan. The new plan is currently under discussion, but our basic strategy will continue in a similar vein. It is no easy task to achieve the qualitative and quantitative goals of a Medium-Term Business Plan and, if business environments change, then this task increases in difficulty. However, let us be ready to respond in a flexible manner and strive to realize our goals.

Over the past year, we have been contemplating how our company ought to evolve from both a medium and a long-term perspective. As a consequence, we expect to announce in spring a new Brand Platform that incorporates our Vision, Mission and Values. At Yusen Logistics, we daily address in a sincere manner the challenges both of our customers and of society through our business activities. Through these activities, I hope that we will be able to create new corporate values and, at the same time, I hope that we will evolve so that each employee can be proud of being a member of the Yusen Logistics Group. When creating new proposals, we must consider our deep ties to markets and societies; this will enable us to increase the value of the Yusen Logistics brand, and to develop into a company that will be chosen by our customers. And this, in turn, will contribute to the further growth of our company. I hope that all of you will develop a thorough understanding of our behavioral principles, “YL Brand Platform,” so that, together, we can unite and create a new Yusen Logistics.

Compliance

I have no doubt that all Yusen Logistics Group employees are aware of the importance of compliance. Precisely because you are aware, however, I ask you to once again review your activities. Even a minor misunderstanding or mistake can pose a serious risk and threaten to shake the group’s management to its very core. Compliance violations cause financial harm to the company, tarnish our brand, and inflict major damage not only on the individuals involved but on all group employees. This could lead to the loss of the trust of [all] our stakeholders, and signal a significant drop in the value of our group. I hope that you understand the gravity of such infringements, and I ask you all to go about your business activities in a fair and honest manner.

Closing

In order for Yusen Logistics to achieve continued growth, it is essential that we observe compliance and coexist in harmony with society. We can contribute to the development of the company by striving to innovate while maintaining high ethical standards. It is my hope that, through our Logistics Business, Yusen Logistics will help create a sustainable, valuable future, and achieve further growth as a truly global total logistics provider.

Finally, please allow me to wish all employees of the Yusen Logistics Group and all your families a happy and prosperous New Year.
