President’s message for the New Year

$

0

I would like to wish everybody a Happy New Year.

I am sure that you built up your energy and had a fulfilling time during the New Year’s holiday period. I am delighted to be able to usher in the beginning of a new year with everybody at the Yusen Logistics Group in Japan and around the world.

Review of 2017

Reflecting over last year, improved employment conditions and recovery in private consumption meant that signs of global economic recovery were seen. In the international logistics market, there was sound movement of both ocean and air freight. Against this background, our group’s Long-term Vision, “TRANSFORM 2025,” was announced in spring last year. In this announcement, we indicated the stance that we were aiming for as well as how we would achieve that stance. We also defined our group’s management philosophy of Vision, Mission and Values and various initiatives were newly started in accordance with TRANSFORM 2025 from a medium- to long-term viewpoint in the aim of continuous growth. With the understanding and cooperation of the group overall, we have again handled more ocean and air freight than the previous year. In the logistics business, we are making a new start for the future in each field, including proactively deploying operations, opening new facilities, and adding high-added-value facilities. However, we did not handle as much freight as was anticipated and improving gross profit took time. As a result, profits decreased dramatically and this was a tough blow for us as a company.

TRANSFORM 2025

Last year, we redefined our Vision, Mission and Values, which can contribute to customers and society based on our single identity held by more than 22,000 employees around the world. To achieve our vision of “connecting people, businesses and communities to a better future through logistics,” we are employing insight to improve service quality, and innovation to become the world's preferred supply chain logistics company and contribute to the sustainable development of business and society. In doing this, it is vital that we aim to become the world’s preferred company.

I am sure that you are all engaging in your daily work with the shared values of being Connected, Committed and Creative, which will lead to this action. With our globally shared Vision, Mission and Values, we have fostered a stronger sense of unity. The accumulation of our action models as demonstrated by our Values 9-box has created the Yusen Logistics culture and become a firm foundation to steadily approach our long-term vision and to offer our customers higher values.

Let us strongly emphasize this sense of values and certainly execute our basic, business and regional strategies.

Future Prospects

As announced on October 31 of last year, a takeover bid was started by our parent company, Nippon Yusen Kaisha. Our company will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nippon Yusen Kaisha this business term.

This will make it possible to strengthen our business and regional strategies, increase the efficiency of our business processes, and invest in growth regions at a greater scale than previously possible. Improving our medium- to long-term profitability and competitive power will further enhance our corporate values. We believe that this will aid in pushing us toward completion of our Long-term Vision, “TRANSFORM 2025.” After becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary company, management resources and expertise will be able to be mutually used amongst the Nippon Yusen Group, thereby contributing to future business development. As we will maintain our brand and continue to deploy our business as an independent logistics operator, it is my hope that you will all work in unity with us going forward.

Compliance

We need to cover the topic of legal compliance once again.

Last year, a major breach of compliance occurred at our company, resulting in a very heavy penalty being imposed. Breaches of compliance greatly damage company trust. Nothing can be prioritized over legal compliance. If you have any doubts or questions regarding daily business activities, do not hesitate to discuss this with somebody.

While I realize that you have undergone various types of training regarding compliance in the past, such training will be continued going forward. Therefore, I hope that each one of you will become more aware of compliance and make every effort to enhance our company framework and regain the trust of our customers.

Conclusion

At Yusen Logistics, we need to keep developing as a company in a sustained manner into the future. To do that, each one of us needs to thoroughly fulfil our role. Please ask yourself, “How can I create better connections in everything I do?” Asking yourself this question will lead to the achievement of TRANSFORM 2025 while also giving you a sense of the significance of and pride in working at our company. It is my earnest wish that everyone at the Yusen Logistics Group and your families will have a healthy and fulfilling year ahead. I hereby conclude my New Year’s greeting to you.

Yusen Logistics becomes the first Japanese logistics provider to acquire halal certification for warehousing in Indonesia

PT. Yusen Logistics Solutions Indonesia which provides warehousing in Indonesia, obtained halal certification of warehousing from the Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics, the Indonesia Council of Ulama (LPPOM-MUI) last November. This makes Yusen Logistics the first Japanese logistics provider to acquire halal certification for warehousing. Combined with the certification for ocean and air forwarding that we received last year, we can now offer one-stop halal logistics services throughout Indonesia.

The obtained certification covers the entire range of our various logistics services such as storage, sorting and shipping at No. 1 and No. 2 warehouses owned by Yusen Logistics Solutions Indonesia in MM2100 Industrial Town, in a suburb of Jakarta. Specialized spaces have been provided for halal products inside warehouses, and our staff are trained on the handling of halal products in order to conduct operations following halal-certified procedures.

Last August, PT. Yusen Logistics Indonesia which provides the ocean and air forwarding business, became the first Japanese logistics provider to acquire halal certification for ocean and air freight export and import at Jakarta’s airports and seaports. With the additional certification for warehousing, we will be able to manage inventory for halal products imported through Jakarta Airport at Yusen Logistics Solutions Indonesia’s warehouses and deliver products in accordance with customers’ orders. This system will allow us to provide halal-certified services across the entire supply chain within Indonesia.

Yusen Logistics is establishing a halal logistics service across Asia. In April 2015, Yusen Logistics became the first Japanese logistics provider to acquire halal certification in Malaysia for both transportation and warehousing operations, and in April 2017, we were the first logistics provider in Thailand to acquire the same certification at our Laem Chabang warehouse. This new certification makes us the only Japanese logistics provider in Indonesia that can offer the entire range of halal logistics services. We will continue to develop global halal logistics so that Muslim customers can use our products with peace of mind.

Yusen Logistics (China) Co., Ltd. has begun an intermodal transport service using the Wuhan–Guangzhou Inland Railway. The service will be offered three times a week from Wuhan to Guangzhou and once a week from Guangzhou to Wuhan, supporting the growing demand for road transportation between plants in these two regions home to booming automotive industries.

In recent years, major automobile manufacturers have accelerated their expansion in Wuhan by launching new plants there, and the area is gaining greater prominence as a center for the automotive industry. In Guangzhou automotive sales remain favorable and companies are continuing to expand their plants and manufacturing facilities. Many automotive parts manufacturers operate in both Wuhan and Guangzhou, and in response to the growing demand for transportation between these plants, Yusen Logistics (China) has started an intermodal transport service using the Wuhan–Guangzhou Inland Railway.

We offer this service three times a week from Wuhan to Guangzhou and once a week from Guangzhou to Wuhan. Whether the departure is from Wuhan or Guangzhou, cargo is loaded onto the freight car on the day that it is collected, and is dispatched the following day at around 2 a.m., arriving at the terminal two days later at about 2 a.m., being delivered that afternoon at the earliest. By using the Wuhan–Guangzhou Inland Railway for this service, we can reduce costs compared with chartered trucks, and also possible to offer service on a fixed schedule. By switching from truck transportation to this service, we will be able to adapt to exhaust emission regulations and other environmental regulations, which are expected to become stricter in China in the future.

Yusen Logistics (China) Co., Ltd. offers a variety of services combining sea and air transportation and contract logistics with  logistics center in Wuhan measuring about 3,000 square meters and another in Guangzhou about 15,500 square meters. . Going forward, Yusen Logistics will continue to provide bespoke supply chain logistics.

Yusen Logistics Announces Customs Bonded Warehouse in Mexico

$

Yusen Logistics, a leading third-party logistics provider, has gained bonded status for its Bajio Logistics Center (BLC) in Mexico, which will enable customers to securely store cargo without immediate payment of duty and taxes.

Located near Celaya, the BLC includes a 53,280-square-foot warehouse and an ocean container depot with capacity for 1,000 TEUs.

“Our customs bonded services will enable our customers to lower their costs through duty and tax-free storage of imported goods into Mexico,” said Jordan Dewart, President, Yusen Logistics Mexico, noting that the warehouse is only one of a few bonded warehouse operations supporting the automotive industry in the Bajio region.

“With this service, we’re able to provide increased flexibility to our local customers, while allowing our foreign customers to have a larger presence in the Mexico market,” he added.

A customs bonded warehouse is a secured area where imported dutiable merchandise may be stored, manipulated, or undergo manufacturing operations without payment of duty for up to two years from the date of importation. This enables companies to extend the payment of taxes until the moment in which the product is consumed or sold, allowing the importer to improve the flow of cash.

Currently, Yusen Logistics has two customers utilizing the service. The warehouse and container depot areas are protected by video surveillance, access control, fences, and guards. Warehouse services include Inventory management, sorting and repacking of goods, expiration supply management, customs brokerage services, storage-in-transit, reverse logistics management, export preparation, and other value-added services. Container depot services include inventory control by specialized management System, domestic and bonded service, cargo weight certified (Verified Gross Mass or VGM), quality control inspection, maintenance and repair, container conditioning and transportation port-to-port and door-to-door.

Yusen Logistics Named to Inbound Logistics’ G75 List

Secaucus, NJ: Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc., a leading third-party logistics provider, has been named to Inbound Logistics’ annual 75 Green Supply Chain Partners (G75) list.

This marks the fourth year Yusen Logistics has been named to the G75 list, which recognizes companies for their commitment to supply chain sustainability.

In recent years, Yusen Logistics has invested in green initiatives throughout its warehouse network. This year, the 3PL was recognized for upgrading its Carson, California campus with energy-efficient lighting and a white roof. Previously installed in the warehouse, the company expanded the LED system to include the office and exterior yard. The white roof keeps the warehouse cool by deflecting up to 80 percent of sunlight, resulting in significant energy savings.

In addition, Yusen Logistics is using lithium-ion battery-powered forklifts in its Carson warehouse, as well as at its Sumner, Washington facility. The lift trucks produce zero byproducts and the company expects to see an average energy savings of about 16 percent per truck.

“Our team takes pride in finding ways to reduce our environmental footprint and improve energy efficiency,” says Greg Futato, Vice President, Contract Logistics Group, Yusen Logistics. “We are truly honored to be recognized by Inbound Logistics again. It’s a testament to our commitment to sustainability.”

Inbound Logistics' 75 Green Supply Chain Partners highlights sustainability leaders in the logistics and transportation sector. The list is compiled based on four criteria – measurable green results, sustainability innovation, continuous improvement, and industry recognition.

TASCO BERHAD (TASCO) established a subsidiary, TASCO YUSEN GOLD COLD SDN BHD (TYGC), which operates a cold-chain business in Malaysia.

In January last year, TASCO, a Yusen Logistics subsidiary in Malaysia, reached agreements to acquire Gold Cold Transport Sdn Bhd, Inc. (GCT) and MILS Cold Chain Logistics Sdn Bhd(MCCL), two leading cold chain logistics providers in Malaysia, under demand for refrigerated transportation and cold storage facilities for perishable products, such as fresh produce, beverages and pharmaceuticals, is rising as a result of population growth and increased personal consumption throughout the ASEAN region. And TASCO completed the acquisition of GCT in July last year and MCCL in early June this year. In order to further expand cold-chain services, TASCO established a subsidiary, TYGC, which has been operating under the umbrella of GCT and MCCL.

GCT is one of the largest cold chain logistics providers in Malaysia. It has about 200 reefer trucks and a warehouse storage capacity of about 31,000 m², primarily handling frozen and chilled foods. GCT manages approximately 80% of the domestic share of ice cream distribution.

MCCL is the tenth largest cold chain logistics provider in Malaysia. It operates chilled and frozen warehouses (about 7,000 m²) in the area adjacent to Westport of Port Klang. Located near customs and port authorities, the area is also a commercial free zone. In addition to the purchase of MCCL, TASCO completed the acquisition of land (about 160,000 m²) and ambient warehouses (about 23,000 m²) in the area.

Both of these companies have obtained halal certification from the Malaysian government’s certification organization, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), and are able to provide cold-chain services for halal foods in Malaysia. We aim to create a one-stop cold-chain services by linking the both companies' know-how in Malaysia to our global network.

Following our Long-Term Vision, “TRANSFORM 2025”, we are focusing on "Expand cold-chain and healthcare business into one of the region’s main commercial pillars" and "Aggressively look for appropriate investment opportunities" as area themes of South Asia and Oceania region. We will expand the cold-chain business in Malaysia and its know-how globally, providing supply chain logistics service to meet customer needs.

It is anticipated that the acquisition (completed on the 1st August 2018) will result in a 12% revenue growth for Yusen Logistics pushing them towards being one of the UK’s top 10 logistics providers.

Established in 1990, ILG is a fast-growing market leader in ecommerce warehousing, fulfilment and delivery, with an added specific expertise in the fashion and beauty verticals. ILG’s unparalleled commitment to delivering the highest standards of service has led to significant growth over the last decade; quadrupling their facilities, which now offer over 175,000 square feet of warehousing, with over 220 employees serving more than 700 clients worldwide.

Yusen Logistics UK’s expansion into the UK’s fastest growing sector (e-commerce) is a direct response to changing market behaviour.  Yusen Logistics provides full end-to-end international supply chain services which will now give ILG and its customers additional expertise in customs brokerage, cross-border logistics, and access to a further 82 locations with 7 million square feet of warehousing across Europe.

This strategic alliance connects Yusen’s services with ILG’s specialist knowledge, people and infrastructure to deliver full end-to-end B2B and B2C supply chain solutions to an industry high standard.  By placing the customers’ requirements at the centre of the operation, with tailored solutions to safeguard and protect products at every stage of the ecommerce process, ILG and Yusen Logistics will seek to make the seamless fulfilment and delivery an integral part and extension of the customer’s brand deliverable.

Andy Fitt, Managing Director of Yusen Logistics (UK), commented: “This acquisition reinforces our commitment to continued investment in the UK and we’re delighted to be joining forces with ILG. Our businesses complement each other perfectly and together we bring a new and compelling proposition to the market.”

ILG Managing Director, Mike Stephenson, added: “Partnering with Yusen Logistics represents a huge opportunity for our customers and our people. Going forward, our customers will see new, enhanced services as well as the familiar high standards of care they’ve come to expect from us.”

As part of the appropriate acquisition process, Yusen Logistics UK utilised the services of Eversheds Sutherland for commercial and legal advice, together with BDO for financial due diligence.  No changes to the current ILG management team are expected, and it is very much ‘business as usual’ for all ILG customers. ILG and Yusen Logistics share a commitment to ensure that the new alliance will deliver a successful future for all customers and employees.
